Royal Kingdom of the Parts of Speech: How This Program Uses Each of the Multiple Intelligences

Musical-Rhythmic Multiple Intelligence is employed while the RKPS, renaissance style music plays softly in the background through each day's lesson, helping stimulate the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

The Royal Kingdom of the Parts of Speech is presented in a logical, incremental sequence that appeals to the Logical-Mathematical Multiple Intelligence. A new character is introduced each day and builds on the prior knowledge. The R.K.P.S. Formula for each part of speech makes it easy to remember its name and function.

Visual-Spatial Multiple Intelligence is implemented with imaginative 20" x 17" laminated watercolor cartoons of each character in the court of the Royal Kingdom of the Parts of Speech. Color-coded borders on the pictures help to reinforce the relationships of the parts of speech. Smaller sketches of the characters can be copied onto paper for student notes giving another visual connection.

The students apply Interpersonal as well as Verbal-Linguistic Multiple Intelligence as they orally interact, discussing the responsibilities of each character (the function of each part of speech), and how they all relate to the other characters in the court. To enhance Verbal-Linguistic Multiple Intelligence, students also take notes on the new material. (A worksheet and final test are also included.)

Bodily-Kinesthetic Multiple Intelligence is enhanced when students take turns holding the Royal Kingdom character posters in various arrangements that help to demonstrate the function of each part of speech and how it relates to the others. The physical proximity of the character posters helps strengthen the concept. Some characters move several times throughout the lesson, as their relationship to other parts of speech are explored. Bodily-Kinesthetic and Verbal-Linguistic are used again at the end of the lesson when the students toss a nerf ball to each other while saying examples of the part of speech introduced that day.

Each part of speech is reinforced once again through Musical-Rhythmic Multiple Intelligence by singing along with the RKPS songs. Each character in the court of the Royal Kingdom of the Part of Speech has a song that reviews that part of speech and its function.

The daily lesson is concluded with a one minute reflection period where students can digest information and make connections. During this Intrapersonal Multiple Intelligence time, there is no talking, just thinking about what has been presented. This can be in silence or with "thinking music" playing quietly in the background.
